Here’s Why Cats Always Love to Sit in Boxes, According to Science

Forget fancy cat treats, posts, or toys, there’s one thing that our feline friends love more than anything else. Boxes — cats just can’t resist them.

why do cats sit in boxes
Stephen Woods / Flickr

If you’ve ever got a delivery or moved home, you will have noticed just one simple thing. Your cat is obsessed with boxes. When they see them, they just can’t help themselves. Within the space of a few seconds, they will have jumped right in the box and there’s just no way you can get them out. Have you ever wondered why that is? Maybe you haven’t given it all that much thought in the past, but there’s a genuine reason that cats do this. Their love of cardboard boxes is no accident — it’s entirely innate to them.

So, why do cats love boxes so much?

It’s something that’s troubled many cat lovers for quite some time now. The very moment you bring a box into your home, your cat just cannot resist sitting in it. You may imagine that they are playing pretend like kids do, but that’s not the case at all. In fact, according to a recent study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science, there’s a scientific reason that felines are attracted to boxes.

It all has a little something to do with stress. (Because, yes, cats do tend to get rather anxious and stressed out from time to time!) The researchers looked at cats that live in shelters. These creatures tend to be particularly stressed out much of the time since they have to share their environment with other felines.

The results were quite clear — when these cats had boxes to hide inside, their stress levels decreased at a dramatic rate. That suggests that our kitties use boxes a a way to escape the world and de-stress in a private place. Just like us humans need space from time to time, it’s logical that felines would need the same thing.

It’s all about evolution, baby!

Also, when you think about this from an evolutionary standpoint, it makes an awful lot of sense. When felines in the wild feel threatened (or stressed out), the best thing for them to do is find a hiding place. It’s an innate urge; something they just know they have to do. When it comes to domesticated cats, it’s only logical that they would mimic the same behavior. As the saying goes, you can take the cat out of the wild, but you can’t take the wild out of the cat!

Should you get your cat a box?

Well, the short answer is ‘yes’. Creating an environment in which your pet can be comfortable is essential to their happiness and well-being. That’s why you should absolutely make sure that your home is fit for them. You may want to include some cardboard boxes in your cat’s play area, for example. Failing that, there are many other things you could get for your cat.

If you don’t want to litter your home with a load of cardboard boxes, getting some cat furniture that allows them to hide away may be the answer. For example, you could invest in a cat home that offers them some space. There are loads of fantastic accessories you can get for your feline online so why not take a look and see what you can find? You know it makes sense! After all, this little extra could be just what your kitty needs to feel right at home.

How to Show Love to Your Cat (Because They Deserve It!)

We’re all totally obsessed with our kitty cats, but do you know how to show love to your cat? Luckily, we’ve got all the answers you could need.

how to show love to your cat
Sheila Sund / Flickr

Cats truly are the greatest pets ever. Whether they’re snoozing cutely in the corner or just being adorable as they play with some ribbon, there’s so many reasons to adore them. Still, do you honestly know how to show love to your cat? If you don’t have a clue, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve got just a few handy tips that will help you tell your special pet that they mean the absolute world to you. Enjoy!

Give them the perfect cuddle

You may not have given it much thought before now, but there is actually a ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ way to pet your kitty. If you’re thinking about how to show love to your cat, you need to make sure that you get this tiny thing right. Don’t just go ahead and start rubbing your cat; they may not like it and you could upset them by doing so. No, instead, you need to be sensitive about what your cat does and does not like.

One type of cuddle that pretty much every kitty is certain to enjoy is the ‘head to tail’ stroke. It’s just what it says on the tin. You need to stroke your cat firmly and with confidence, starting at the head and ending just before you reach their tail. You should notice that your cat or kitten starts to purr when you give them this affection. The reason is oh-so-simple. They love it!

Head-butt them (no, really!)

Have you ever noticed that your cat head-butts you now and then? Don’t be alarmed! This is actually one of the many ways that a cat will show their love for you. If you want to return the favor, you quite literally can. Sure, it may feel weird rubbing your head on your cat, but this is what their parents will have done when they were younger. For that reason, your kitty is certain to find this action endearing and sweet. Trust us, it really will work!

Of course, there are a few things that you need to remember when it comes to this action. Firstly, you don’t want to be too firm or hard with your cat. Instead, you should make sure that you start out soft, giving them just a tap with your head. You should also pay close attention to how they react. If your cat seems upset or disturbed by this action, stop right away. You don’t want them to feel that you are intruding on their space.

Give them a few treats

There’s no doubt about it… Cats adore having delicious treats. Whether you have special biscuits that you give your pet or even some catnip, there are just so many ways in which you can show them how very much you care. Giving them something extra, aside from their daily food, will make them happy and is something that they are just sure to enjoy!

Still, if you tend to give your cat treats to show them how much you love them, you need to make sure that you don’t make the mistake of overdoing it. All cat lovers want their pets to be happy, but that does not mean that you should give them treats all of the time. Doing so could actually hinder their health or make them fat. Yikes! Be certain to limit the treats that you give your cat so that you don’t have this issue.

Nap with your cat

Finally, if there’s one thing that cats love above everything else it has to be a good old fashioned nap. After all, what could be better than relaxing the hours away? Nothing! When you catch your kitty snoozing away (which is basically all of the time anyway!), why not curl up next to them? This closeness will show them that you really care and, importantly, that you are on the same level as them in terms of social status. When you’re thinking of how to show love to your cat, this has to be at the top of your list.

What’s more, there’s no better way to unwind than to have a literal cat nap with your favorite pet! The next time that you get a chance to have a cheeky little sleep next to your kitty, make sure that you don’t pass it up! Getting closer to your cat and enjoying some real quality time with them is a great way to show them that you appreciate just how very cute they are. Adorable!

Where to Pet Your Cat to Make Them Happy as Larry!

We all want to pet and cuddle our cats now and then, but how can we be sure they actually like it? Here’s where to pet your cat to keep them happy.

Where to Pet Your Cat
Adam Heath / Flickr

When you get home from a long day at work, there’s just one scamp that you look forward to seeing again and again. Having a cat waiting at home for you is one of the best feelings in the world. The very first thing that you’re going to want to do when you walk through the door is go ahead and give them a massive cuddle. After all, they really do deserve it! Still, there are some places that kitties just don’t like to be touched. If you want to make them love you and feel secure, here’s where to pet your cat. You’re welcome.

Under the chin

Around the jawbone area and under your cat’s chin, you will find that there are a whole load of nerves. That means that your cat will really love a cuddle here. You need to make sure that you start off as soft as possible. You don’t know how sensitive your pet is and the very last thing that you want to do is alarm them. Start with one or two fingers and gently rub just beneath the chin area. As you do so, make sure that you watch your cat’s reaction. If they like it, they will likely lift their chin upward so that you can really get in them and give them some love.

Behind their ears

Another place that some cat lovers tend to neglect is just behind the ears. Here, your cat has a whole load of fur which means that they can often get quite itchy from time to time. By stroking this area, you are relieving the itch for your cat and giving them some much needed comfort. Often, you will find that your pet lets you know where they want to be cuddled. They may present a certain area to you or show you where to pet your cat in a way. Be sure to pay close attention to them to see what they do. That way, you can be certain that they will be happy and content with you.

Around the cheek area

You should really be focusing on the head area when it comes to petting your cat. Felines like to know that they are in control and they need to see your hands much of the time. That’s why they feel most comfortable with you scratching around their cheeks and giving them a big old rub there. Again, this area might be quite fluffy, and so you will also help them to relieve any itches that they may have there too. When your pet likes having their cheeks rubbed, they will crane their neck forward to let you know about it. That little sign is one that you want to watch out for when cuddling. It means that you’re doing a seriously great job!

On the forehead

Tracing the line of your cat’s forehead with your fingers is a cute way to show them just a little affection. After that, you might want to move things up a scale and go for the whole hand. Remember, you don’t want to be too rough with your cat. Kitties can be quite precious about the way that you touch them (unlike dogs!), and so the more sensitive you are, the better they will enjoy the attention. When considering where to pet your cat, you should also think about how hard or soft you need to stroke them.

Down their spine

If you want to go in for a big cuddle, this is what you need to do. Cats like a strong hand running down their back or spine. Be sure to be firm but not press down too hard (or you could run the risk of hurting them!). What you really want to do is start from their head and move your hand backward quickly. If your kitty likes this, they will arch their back. Watch out for this telltale sign as it signifies the fact that your cat is enjoying the affection and would like a little more.

Warning! Avoid the tale and tummy

Now that we’ve covered where to pet your cat, there’s one other thing that we need to mention. There are actually a couple of places that your cat will hate you touching. Of course, you need to avoid these areas at all costs, unless you watch to get scratched and hissed at! It’s important that you take note of what your cat likes and dislikes. While all felines are different, you can use these hints as general rules.

You should always avoid the tummy area as this place is often too sensitive to be cuddled at all. Felines tend to want to protect their stomach at all costs and the last thing you want to do is take that away from them. You should also never play with your cat’s tale. As tempting as it may be, this is uncomfortable for your kitty and they will not like it!

Understanding Happy Cat Body Language And How To Spot it

How’s your kitty feeling? Here’s how to look for happy cat body language!

understanding happy cat body language
Romana Klee / flickr

Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if our cats could tell us just how they were feeling? Imagine it. They simply tell us what they wanted, what they were thinking, and when they were hungry. Sadly, we live in the all-too-ordinary real world. So, instead of our kitties talking to us, we need to know how understand happy cat body language and how you can spot it.

Now, if you’re a new pet owner, you might not know all that much about cats and how they act. These animals are totally unique in the way that they show their feelings. Noticing the signs is not all that easy at the best of times, especially when you’re not sure what you’re looking for. If you want to be able to recognize and understand happy cat body language, though, you’ve come to the right place.

Of course, all pet owners want their little kitties to be as calm, comfortable, and content as possible! That’s why we have to keep an eye on our pets so we can tell how they are feeling. If your cat starts doing any of the following things, you can bet they’re happier than Larry.

Upward pointing tail

Cats use their tails for a few different reasons. For one thing, they use them to help balance. That explains why cats are such brave gymnasts, right? You probably had no idea but cats also use their tails as a way of communicating with us.

When a kitty has their tail pointed straight upward (or even curled over a little at the top), it’s because they are both alert and happy. If you notice your kitty patrolling around your home like this, it’s a seriously great sign. That’s one cheerful feline right there!

Ears pointed forward

One of the things that cat-lovers adore so very much is just how expressive cats are with their ears. These animals can move their ears unlike any other animal and it’s just so utterly charming! When your kitty has their ears pointed forward, you just know that they are in a great mood. This is one of the happy cat body language signs that is the easiest to see.

Slow blinking

The feline species seem to be sleepy at the best of times. Still, if you catch your kitty blinking slowly at you, you should feel seriously honored. This little custom is a sign that your cat is happy and content with you. Do the very same thing back to them! They will love it.

Eyes relaxed

You should, of course, also pay close attention to your cat’s pupils if you want to know how he or she is feeling. When your kitty is in ‘fight mode’, their pupils will get massive in a matter of mere seconds. It can actually be extremely scary!

When your cat has relaxed eyes with small pupils, it’s because he or she is as calm and content as can be. Now is not the time to both your cat. Let them rest and just be pleased that they feel comfortable in your home.

Lying out in the open

Now, when cats feel threatened, the very first thing that they are going to do is run away to hide. If your kitty is always hiding away underneath things or even behind them, it’s a real cause for concern. On the flip side of that, an easy to see form of happy cat body language will be when they lie out in the open. This is a sign that your cat has nothing to fear at all. Bliss.

Tail rubbing

Finally, here’s a sign that most cat owners should have noticed by now. If you find that your cat always rubs past you with his or her tail, it is not them trying to trip you up. Oh no, this is their way of telling you that they love you. Only the happiest, friendliest of cats will do this. So, if your little kitty makes a habit out of it, you should be very excited!

Hint: Keep an eye on your kitty!

Of course, these are not the only forms of happy cat body language. Every feline is an individual and will find their own way of expressing themselves. Make sure that you watch your pet closely on a day to day basis and notice certain behaviors in them. You will likely see that your cat has particular, unique habits when they feel content! Happy watching.
