Whether we like to admit it or not, many of us love talking to our cats. When there’s no one else at home but your beloved pet, it makes sense that you would confide in them. One thing that all too many people wonder, though, is do cats like when you talk to them? Well, let’s take a look at the facts and see what we can find out right now.

First of all, before you worry that you’re the only one having full-blown chats with your kitty, there’s something you should know — we all do it. According to a 2015 study, a whopping 88% of people talk to their pet owners as though they are human. That’s an awful lot of us who sit around nattering to our animals. Weird, right?

Cats can identify their owner’s voice

While you’re talking, though, do you ever wonder whether your cat really cares? While they might not love you talking to them, they can certainly distinguish the sound of your voice from that of other people. Research from the University of Tokyo found that cats reacted differently when they heard their owner’s voice than they did when it was the sound of a stranger speaking.

There were actually small biological signs of recognition, such as the kitties’ eyes dilating and the like. That means that when you speak aloud, your cat knows that it is you who is talking. This may also explain why some felines get a tad spooked when you have guests; they notice the sound of a stranger’s voice, and so freak out.

They also respond to the pitch of your voice

Have you ever noticed the fact that cats seem to respond better to female voices than male ones? Well, the reason is simple. Felines can hear high-pitched voices much more easily than they can lower ones. That is to say that when a woman speaks, they are much more likely to react simply because they can hear the sound more clearly.

If you happen to have trouble getting your pet to acknowledge you when you speak to them, try speaking in a higher pitch. You may just find that this small, yet significant change to the way you talk makes all the difference.

Do cats like when you talk to them?

Once you’ve got your cat to respond to you, you may wonder whether they like it. Well, one interesting fact is that cats only meow to humans — this is not the way in which they communicate with one another. What that suggests is that, yes, they do enjoy us talking to them on some level. After all, why else would they attempt to communicate back with us?

Since our pets form an unbreakable bond with us from the moment we get them, it’s only natural that they would crave this form of interaction. Speaking to your cat is a way of acknowledging their existence and showing them that you really do care about them in a deep and meaningful way. What’s more, it’s a whole load of fun too!

This Japanese Firm Lets Its Employees Bring Cats Into The Office And We’re Jealous

Whether you love your job or can’t stand it, I’m sure you’ll agree it could be improved by one thing — cats. One day, that dream could be a reality.

Yoko Akiyoshi / Twitter

We all get that Monday morning feel when the week begins. Your alarm clock starts buzzing away and your heart sinks as you remember it’s time to start yet another working week. Nightmare. Well, imagine how much better your day would be if you could take your kitty into the office with you. If you worked at one particular company in Japan, you could!

Yes, the leading IT firm, Ferray, in Tokyo has a rather intriguing policy for its staff members. Way back in the year 2000, the company introduced the ‘cat accompanying commuting’ policy, which means that people can take their kitties into the office each and every day. Um, can we have a job there, please?!

And, that’s not all! The company CEO loves cats so very much that he also gives his staff 5,000 yen (around £35) when they rescue a kitty from a shelter. The idea is that the workers at the firm give more homes to cats that need their help. What’s more, the fact that they can bring them into work means that they can give them extra care and attention.

While you may think that having your kitty at work would be a distraction, this is one boss who seems to think that it’s really no big deal. “Although cats may get in the way when (the employees) want to concentrate, they are also charming, they do not develop into problems,” the head of the firm, Hidenobu Fukuda recently told The Metro.

All we can say is that we hope companies around the world follow suit and adopt this cat-friendly policy. Taking your pet to work would not only be great for your cat, but also great for your general stress levels. As far as we can see, it really is a ‘win win’ situation!

How to Show Love to Your Cat (Because They Deserve It!)

We’re all totally obsessed with our kitty cats, but do you know how to show love to your cat? Luckily, we’ve got all the answers you could need.

how to show love to your cat
Sheila Sund / Flickr

Cats truly are the greatest pets ever. Whether they’re snoozing cutely in the corner or just being adorable as they play with some ribbon, there’s so many reasons to adore them. Still, do you honestly know how to show love to your cat? If you don’t have a clue, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve got just a few handy tips that will help you tell your special pet that they mean the absolute world to you. Enjoy!

Give them the perfect cuddle

You may not have given it much thought before now, but there is actually a ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ way to pet your kitty. If you’re thinking about how to show love to your cat, you need to make sure that you get this tiny thing right. Don’t just go ahead and start rubbing your cat; they may not like it and you could upset them by doing so. No, instead, you need to be sensitive about what your cat does and does not like.

One type of cuddle that pretty much every kitty is certain to enjoy is the ‘head to tail’ stroke. It’s just what it says on the tin. You need to stroke your cat firmly and with confidence, starting at the head and ending just before you reach their tail. You should notice that your cat or kitten starts to purr when you give them this affection. The reason is oh-so-simple. They love it!

Head-butt them (no, really!)

Have you ever noticed that your cat head-butts you now and then? Don’t be alarmed! This is actually one of the many ways that a cat will show their love for you. If you want to return the favor, you quite literally can. Sure, it may feel weird rubbing your head on your cat, but this is what their parents will have done when they were younger. For that reason, your kitty is certain to find this action endearing and sweet. Trust us, it really will work!

Of course, there are a few things that you need to remember when it comes to this action. Firstly, you don’t want to be too firm or hard with your cat. Instead, you should make sure that you start out soft, giving them just a tap with your head. You should also pay close attention to how they react. If your cat seems upset or disturbed by this action, stop right away. You don’t want them to feel that you are intruding on their space.

Give them a few treats

There’s no doubt about it… Cats adore having delicious treats. Whether you have special biscuits that you give your pet or even some catnip, there are just so many ways in which you can show them how very much you care. Giving them something extra, aside from their daily food, will make them happy and is something that they are just sure to enjoy!

Still, if you tend to give your cat treats to show them how much you love them, you need to make sure that you don’t make the mistake of overdoing it. All cat lovers want their pets to be happy, but that does not mean that you should give them treats all of the time. Doing so could actually hinder their health or make them fat. Yikes! Be certain to limit the treats that you give your cat so that you don’t have this issue.

Nap with your cat

Finally, if there’s one thing that cats love above everything else it has to be a good old fashioned nap. After all, what could be better than relaxing the hours away? Nothing! When you catch your kitty snoozing away (which is basically all of the time anyway!), why not curl up next to them? This closeness will show them that you really care and, importantly, that you are on the same level as them in terms of social status. When you’re thinking of how to show love to your cat, this has to be at the top of your list.

What’s more, there’s no better way to unwind than to have a literal cat nap with your favorite pet! The next time that you get a chance to have a cheeky little sleep next to your kitty, make sure that you don’t pass it up! Getting closer to your cat and enjoying some real quality time with them is a great way to show them that you appreciate just how very cute they are. Adorable!

101 Pictures Of Cats Sneezing That Will Make Your Day!

If you’re having a bad day so far, we might just have something to cheer you up! These hilarious pictures of cats sneezing should give you a giggle.

pictures of cats sneezing

Let’s face it, most of the time, cats are downright graceful. These beautiful little creatures strut around like they own every damn place. (And, frankly, that’s probably because they think that they do!) No matter what your cat is doing – sleeping, playing around or the like – they will always look like they are in control…. With one huge exception. If you’ve ever pictures of cats sneezing you will know it’s so very funny.

For a split-second in time, that cat is out of control and looks really weird. The first time it happens, you may find it kind of odd. Still, you will come to realize that this is just of your kitty’s many quirks. If you’ve caught your kitty sneezing in the past, I’m sure that you’ve done what any sane-minded person would do and reached for the camera (or, because we live in a modern world, your phone!).

The problem is that catching a cat sneeze on film is about as difficult as it sounds. These little kitties sneeze in mere seconds, which means that it all happens way too fast. You might think that you’ve got the perfect snap, but then you look down and see that that is so not the case. Oops.

Luckily, there are some rather talented photographers out there who have caught their cats in a mid-sneeze mess. As you might imagine, the results are actually rather brilliant. At Alley Cat, we’re fascinated by just about everything our felines do – including sneezing. That’s why we scoured the web (well, Instagram!) to find some of the best pictures of cats sneezing just for you.

It wasn’t an easy job, let us tell you that! Still, it was about time that someone did it. So, without further ado, check out some of these pictures. If they don’t make you laugh your little socks off, we’ll eat our hat!

Where to Pet Your Cat to Make Them Happy as Larry!

We all want to pet and cuddle our cats now and then, but how can we be sure they actually like it? Here’s where to pet your cat to keep them happy.

Where to Pet Your Cat
Adam Heath / Flickr

When you get home from a long day at work, there’s just one scamp that you look forward to seeing again and again. Having a cat waiting at home for you is one of the best feelings in the world. The very first thing that you’re going to want to do when you walk through the door is go ahead and give them a massive cuddle. After all, they really do deserve it! Still, there are some places that kitties just don’t like to be touched. If you want to make them love you and feel secure, here’s where to pet your cat. You’re welcome.

Under the chin

Around the jawbone area and under your cat’s chin, you will find that there are a whole load of nerves. That means that your cat will really love a cuddle here. You need to make sure that you start off as soft as possible. You don’t know how sensitive your pet is and the very last thing that you want to do is alarm them. Start with one or two fingers and gently rub just beneath the chin area. As you do so, make sure that you watch your cat’s reaction. If they like it, they will likely lift their chin upward so that you can really get in them and give them some love.

Behind their ears

Another place that some cat lovers tend to neglect is just behind the ears. Here, your cat has a whole load of fur which means that they can often get quite itchy from time to time. By stroking this area, you are relieving the itch for your cat and giving them some much needed comfort. Often, you will find that your pet lets you know where they want to be cuddled. They may present a certain area to you or show you where to pet your cat in a way. Be sure to pay close attention to them to see what they do. That way, you can be certain that they will be happy and content with you.

Around the cheek area

You should really be focusing on the head area when it comes to petting your cat. Felines like to know that they are in control and they need to see your hands much of the time. That’s why they feel most comfortable with you scratching around their cheeks and giving them a big old rub there. Again, this area might be quite fluffy, and so you will also help them to relieve any itches that they may have there too. When your pet likes having their cheeks rubbed, they will crane their neck forward to let you know about it. That little sign is one that you want to watch out for when cuddling. It means that you’re doing a seriously great job!

On the forehead

Tracing the line of your cat’s forehead with your fingers is a cute way to show them just a little affection. After that, you might want to move things up a scale and go for the whole hand. Remember, you don’t want to be too rough with your cat. Kitties can be quite precious about the way that you touch them (unlike dogs!), and so the more sensitive you are, the better they will enjoy the attention. When considering where to pet your cat, you should also think about how hard or soft you need to stroke them.

Down their spine

If you want to go in for a big cuddle, this is what you need to do. Cats like a strong hand running down their back or spine. Be sure to be firm but not press down too hard (or you could run the risk of hurting them!). What you really want to do is start from their head and move your hand backward quickly. If your kitty likes this, they will arch their back. Watch out for this telltale sign as it signifies the fact that your cat is enjoying the affection and would like a little more.

Warning! Avoid the tale and tummy

Now that we’ve covered where to pet your cat, there’s one other thing that we need to mention. There are actually a couple of places that your cat will hate you touching. Of course, you need to avoid these areas at all costs, unless you watch to get scratched and hissed at! It’s important that you take note of what your cat likes and dislikes. While all felines are different, you can use these hints as general rules.

You should always avoid the tummy area as this place is often too sensitive to be cuddled at all. Felines tend to want to protect their stomach at all costs and the last thing you want to do is take that away from them. You should also never play with your cat’s tale. As tempting as it may be, this is uncomfortable for your kitty and they will not like it!

Here’s Why Taylor Swift Has The Best Cats Ever

Have you seen her two little bundles of fur? We take a look at Taylor Swift ’s cat breed and just how cute the little scamps really are!

Love her or hate her, the first lady of pop is something of a phenomenon. Over the last five years or so, this songstress has won the world’s hearts by creating some of the catchiest tunes of our time. Whether you’re a Swifty or not-y, you will have noticed one rather brilliant thing about this lady. She has some pretty cute kitties. Here’s what you need to know about Taylor Swift ’s cat breed and her very lovely feline friends.

First of all, these aren’t just two regular cats. Oh no, these are kitties with full names, just like we have. In case you didn’t know, Taylor’s cats are called Olivia Benson and Meredith Grey. You’ve likely spotted a glimpse of these two beauties before now. Even if you don’t follow Taylor on Instagram, you may have seen them in the press. You see, these little kitties lead the same jet-setting lifestyle as their main lady.

They’ve come a long way since the hourly cat fights of the past.

When they’re not flying around the world on Taylor’s personal jet (which, by the way, they have their own luggage for!), they’re chilling out with the girl herself. The two cats have very different personalities, actually.

Meredith seems to be the grumpy one. In every picture, this beautiful little feline looks as though she’s frowning her little face off all the time. On the other hand, Olivia is far more happy-go-lucky. She’s the one who always seems to be hanging out with Taylor and enjoying the high life. Regardless, it seems as though the two felines are always loving life.

If you follow Taylor on Instagram (Go! Do it now!), you will notice that you get some pretty funny updates about these two kitties. From time to time, they both act… well… weird! The two of them seem to have the dream life and perhaps that’s why they feel so comfortable all the time. From exposing their well-fed bellies to generally larking around, these cats are just so adorably funny that you won’t be able to take your eyes of them.

One of the questions that many people ask time and time again is about Taylor Swift’s cats breed. So, what are these little beauties, eh? And why do we all love them so very much? Well, we can reveal that Olivia is actually a Scottish Fold breed kitty. Sadly, though, the breed of Taylor’s other cat, Meredith, remains a mystery! Who knows, eh? For now we will just have to keep on guessing as we flick through many pictures of the kitties. It’s a hard life!

Why Do Cats Push With Their Paws When They Are Getting Cozy?

You’ve likely seen your cat doing this cute thing, but why do cats push with their paws and what on earth does it mean?

why do cats push with their paws
Rich Moore / Flickr

There comes a point when every cat lover notices this bizarre little quirk about their cat. You probably first saw your kitty do this when they were sitting on your lap. Rather than just curling up into a ball, sometimes, these sweet little creatures will ‘knead’ or push down on your with their paws. This is by no means an aggressive move as I’m sure you will already have realized. Still, what’s the deal and why do cats push with their paws?

They learn this habit as kittens

So, where does this whole ‘kneading’ thing come from? Well, when your cat was just a little kitten, they will have picked up this trait. The fact of the matter is that when cats are nursing from their moms (you know, when they are drinking their mom’s milk!), they knead at the same time. There’s actually a highly scientific reason behind this behavior. You see, the sensation helps the mother to have a steady flow of milk for her young. Essentially, what the kittens are doing is massaging the area to help the milk come out of the teat.

If you happen to have had a cat with a litter of kittens, you may have noticed them doing this. Honestly, it’s really very sweet to see firsthand. All the little cats gather around their mother and copy this very same ‘kneading’ action. What’s rather surprising is the fact that man cats take this behavior well into their adult years too.

It’s a sign of affection and comfort

So, what does it mean when a cat does this as an adult? Why do cats push with their paws when they are sitting on our laps? Well, you will love the answer to these questions. In short, cats knead when they are happy or content. So, when your cat crawls up onto your lap and gets all cozy, the chances are that they are very pleased to be with you. It’s one of the many ways that they show you a little affection.

The moment your cat begins to knead your knees, you should actually feel very honored. They feel comforted by you just like they did by their mother! In a way, they are remembering how it was to be a kitten and mimicking the things that they did back then. Of course, we don’t provide our cats with milk (because that would be gross) but we do give them a sense of well-being and calm. That is much like what their mother would have given them when they were very young.

Suckling and kneading at the same time

Sometimes, you will notice that kneading doesn’t just happen on it’s own. Oh no, it’s all too often accompanied by its partner in crime; suckling. Most of the time, your cat will find a favorite blanket or cushion that they like to knead and suckle at the same time.

Note: Not all cats do this so don’t panic if you’ve never seen your kitty give it a whirl!

When you first see your cat doing this it may look kind of strange. They will be holding some material in their mouth, pushing down with their paws, and sucking away. Sure, it might seem strange to see a fully-grown cat doing this, but it’s very common. Here, your kitty is simulating what they would have done when they were just little kittens. As we’ve already mentioned, this is exactly how your cat would have nursed from its mom as a young animal. Oftentimes, you will find that cats do this for comfort or just out of habit.

As you probably know by now, many people take thumb-sucking into their adult lives. Well, your cat choosing to suckle and knead on things is actually no different to that. They are simply expressing a habit that they learned when they were younger. While some cats stop doing it after they are kittens, many never do.

What if your cat doesn’t knead?

If you’ve never noticed your cat kneading or pushing down on you, don’t panic. Cats, much like people, are totally individual. The likelihood is that some kitties will never develop this habit and that’s perfectly okay. It doesn’t mean that they are not happy around you or even comfortable in your home.

Oh no, cats have loads of ways of showing that they love you, and so you really should not read too much into it!
